Your Questions About the Series, Answered

We know you want to know before you dive in — and we love that!

Here are the questions we hear most often.

Is this a children's book?

Not exactly! The It's a Wonderful Dog series is written for adults and older teens who love animals, community, and stories with heart. That said, many readers enjoy sharing select passages with younger readers who are ready for deeper themes.

A helpful rule of thumb: if a child understands the themes of A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens or can follow the storyline of It's a Wonderful Life, they would likely connect with the first book, A Christmas Tail. For Books Two through Four, we recommend readers be 14 and older, as the stories explore themes of loss, redemption, and grief in a gentle but honest way. Parents know their children best — feel free to reach out if you have specific questions.

Does the dog die?

We hear this one a lot! Without giving too much away — Bear Bailey's journey is one of love, purpose, and legacy. The series handles the natural arc of a dog's life with tenderness and hope rather than heartbreak. The Rainbow Bridge is a recurring presence, but it is portrayed as a place of peace and reunion.

Will this make me cry?

Quite possibly — but in the best way. Readers often describe the series as "a good cry" — the kind that leaves you feeling full rather than empty. Keep the tissues handy just in case! 🐾

Do I need to read the books in order?

Yes! The series follows the seasons of Bear Bailey's life and is best enjoyed in order: A Christmas Tail → Easter Eggs → Summertime → Thanks & Giving. Each book builds on the last, and the characters and community of Merivelle grow richer with every installment.

Is the series complete?

Yes — all four books in the It's a Wonderful Dog series are available now. Start with A Christmas Tail and follow Bear Bailey all the way through to Thanks & Giving.

Is this based on a true story?

The town of Merivelle and its beloved characters are fictional, but the heart behind the series is very real. The author drew on a deep love of her own dogs, community, and the belief that every life — human or canine — leaves a lasting mark.
